Barn Fire in Codorus Township

Saturday, January 21, 2012 As members worked at the station York County 911 struck out  "Box 7-27" for a "High Risk Structure Fire... reported Barn Fire" in the 8100 block of Blooming Grove Road in Codorus Township. The assignment call for Companies 7, 59, 47, Truck 58, Tanker 59,  Brush 59, and MICU 7 to respond. Engine 59-1 (OIC AC Naylor), Tanker 59 (OIC FF Sanders), and Brush 59 (OIC FF Loudermilk) responded with a total of 10 personnel. Chief 7 (Utz) and Captain 7-2 (Kidd) were first to arrive and reported an approx. "40 X 70 Barn fully involved" and Chief 7 established "Blooming Grove Road Command". Engine 59-1 was the first unit to arrive immediately after Chief 7 and was instructed to protect the side "Delta" exposure. Due to the water supply being only 100 feet from the engine Assistant Chief  Naylor instructed 2 members to stretch a Blitz Fire line to side "Delta" to protect the exposure and third member to man the deck gun. The deck gun was used initially to knock down the fire while personnel secured a draft with the Brush Unit. Once the initial knock down occurred crews stretched additional hand lines to extinguish the remaining fire. Command was able to release the Tankers due to the water supply being so close. Members worked at the scene for approx. 4 1/2 hours before Command placed the Box available. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and no injuries to any civilians or fire department personnel were reported.
