Appliance Fire in Shrewsbury Township

Wednesday, August 31, 2011  Members were called out this morning when York County 911 dispatched Box 59-6 for a "Residential Structure Fire...Appliance Fire..refrigerator fire" in the 10000 block of Glen Valley Road in Shrewsbury Township. The Box called for Companies 59, 61, 63,  58 (Truck 58) and EMS Station 59 (Ambulance 59) to respond.  Engine 59-1 (OIC Capt. McCullough) and Rescue 59 (OIC Lt. Naylor) were the first pieces to respond, quickly followed by Tanker 59 with a total of 9 personnel.  Engine and Rescue 59 arrived to find a 2 story single family Colonial with nothing showing and Captain McCullough established "Command 59".  Interior crews made their way into the house and found that the fire in the frig was now out but the house was full of noxious odor from the fire.  Command held the Box to Company 59 units only and placed the remainder of the box available.  Members removed the frig to the yard and used PPV to clear the house of the odor.  The Company 59 units went available at 09:21 hours.

Hurricane Irene

Saturday, August 27, 2011  After days of waiting Hurricane Irene finally arrived in the York County area on Saturday night. Officers and members had spent days prior to Saturday planning and preparing for her arrival. The station and equipment was staffed with 25 members, 5 support members, and a Glen Rock EMA official all ready to handle any event that may occur. Members spent most of Sunday morning removing downed trees that were blocking roads and investigation wires calls. The damage assessment of the Glen Rock area revealed  minor damage caused by the winds.

   


 

MVC Reported with Entrapment

Saturday, July 30, 2011  At 01:39 hours York County 911 dispatched Box 59-13 for a "MVC with Entrapment" on Fair School Road in the area of Mummert Road in Codorus Township. The assignment alerted companies 59, Ambulance 59, and Medic 102-4 to respond.  Chief 59-1 (McCullough) was first to respond quickly followed by Rescue 59 (OIC Lt Naylor) and Engine 59-1 (OIC FF Sanders) with a total of 11 personnel.  Chief 59-1 and Medic 102-4 arrived to find a single vehicle into a tree in a small wooded area.  After a quick assessment Chief McCullough established Command and requested a helicopter and reported he had no entrapment but did need to remove the passenger side door. Both Rescue 59 and Engine 59-1 arrived and went to work.  The Rescue Company began to stabilize the vehicle, tools went into service ( the medic wanted a rapid extrication due to the patients condition), lights went up, and the door removed.  While the Rescue Company did their work the Engine Company deployed a charged hand line and assisted with hazard control.  Once the door was removed both crews assisted Medic 102-4 with patient assessment, packaging, and loading of the patient into the aircraft.  From the time Rescue 59 and Engine 59-1 arrived on the scene till the time the patient was in the aircraft was less then twelve minutes.  The patient was fully immobilized and had full ALS interventions initiated,  The patient was transported by air to York Hospital Class I.  Members had to assist the tow company with chain saws to cut some trees down to allow the vehicle to be removed from the scene.  The Box was placed available at 03:04 hours.

     



 

Water Rescue at Codorus State Park

Friday, July 29, 2011  At 18:16 hours York County 911 alerted Box 47-4 for a "Water Rescue...unknown age subject in the water" in the area of Sinsheim Road and Route 216 in Manheim Township.  The assignment alerted companies 47, 7, 59, Medic 46, Ambulance 52, and  the ATR Team.  Rescue 59 (OIC Capt McCullough) and Duty/Boat 59 (OIC Chief Anstine) responded with a total of 7 personnel.  Supervisor 46 was the first unit to arrive in the area and reported not finding anything at the dispatched location.  York County 911 then updated the location to be near the La-Ho Trail parking area.  Units arrived and quickly confirmed that one subject is in the water unaccounted for.  Units also reported that the incident was now in the 52-22 Box area and units from Station 52 were alerted to respond. Upon arriving on the scene the units from 59 reported to the marina and place the boat in the water then responded to the area the subject was last seen to assist with the water operations.  Rescue 59 then moved to the staging area and assisted with the land based operations.  Command (Chief  52-1 Rich Howard) requested Carroll County Dive Team 13 to the scene to assist, as well as, Jacobus Station 18's three boats.  After several hours the subject was located in the area that witnesses last saw him.  The Box was scaled back and the units from 59 were placed available at 22:23 hours.

     



 

Gas Line Struck in the Boro

Thursday, July 28, 2011  At 13:07 hours York County 911 alerted Box 59-2 for a "Haz-Mat..no injuries..Gas line struck" at the intersection of Cottage Avenue and Hanover Street in Glen Rock Boro. Engine 59-1 (OIC FF Immel) and Car 59 (OIC Lt. Naylor) responded with a total of six (6) personnel. Captain McCullough was first to arrive and reported a service line underground leaking and established Command. Engine 59-1 arrived and secured their own water supply and stretched a hand line. Members immediately shut down the area and began to meter the near by homes. After getting elevated  readings in one (1) of the homes Command requested two more engines to the scene. This brought Engine 59-2 (OIC FF Dale Richardson) and Engine 61-2 (OIC Chief Myers) to the scene. Crews assisted Columbia Gas with ventilation and metering of homes and the sewer system. Crews did remove one (1) dog from the home which had the highest readings. After Columbia Gas stopped the leak and the readings dropped to acceptable levels Command placed the Box available and units returned to service at 15:03 hours.

Another Structure Fire Reported on Rexwood Drive

Monday, July 25, 2011  At 20:58 hours York County 911 struck out Box 59-2 for a "Residential Structure Fire...Basement on Fire" in the 2700 block of Rexwood Drive in Glen Rock Boro.  Engine 59-1 (OIC Capt McCullough) responded within two (2) minutes with six (6) personnel quickly followed by Engine 59-2 (OIC Lt McCullough) with five (5) personnel and Rescue 59 (OIC C. Stiffler) with three (3).  Engine 59-1 arrived and reported light smoke visible on Division 1 and Captain McCullough established the Command. Engine 59-2 covered the plug and Rescue 59 assumed the Truck Company responsibilities. As the crew from Engine 59-1 stretched their hand line to Side "Charlie" they were met by the home owner reporting he had extinguished the fire and removed a treadmill from the basement. As the crew investigated the basement they found a heavy smoke condition and the fire had been knocked down as reported. Crews verified that there was no extension and began ventilating the structure. The cause was determined to be the electrical cord of the treadmill. There were no injuries reported and the estimated cost of the damage was $250.00. Command placed the box available at 21:31 hours.

     



 

Another House Fire in the Boro

Monday, July 25, 2011  As the Boro was being hit by a pretty heavy thunderstorm, York County 911 struck out Box 59-2 for a "Residential Structure Fire...Smoke coming from the roof" in the 2900 blk of Rexwood Drive in Glen Rock Boro. The Box called for Companies 59, 61, 63, Truck 58, and Ambulance 59. Engine 59-1 (OIC A/C McCullough) was first to respond immediately followed by Rescue 59 (OIC Lt Naylor) with a total of 10 personnel. Engine 59-1 arrived to find a two story single family home with smoke showing from the roof area. Chief 59-1 (McCullough) established "Rexwood Command" due to the heat and potential fire spread Command requested a Second Alarm. Members from Engine made forced entry, stretched a hand line to the second floor, and completed a primary search. When the Rescue arrived members entered the structure and began to pull the ceilings and walls on the second floor which exposed heavy fire conditions in the attic area. Engine members immediately knocked all visible fire. Within 10 minutes of the first units arrival the fire was under control. Crews made quick work of the fire and contained all the fire damage to the attic area with only moderate damage to the second floor. The box was placed available at 16:09 hrs. There was no injuries reported and the cause of the fire was determined to be a lightning strike to the second floor. Damage was estimated at  $125,000.

Engine & Tanker Run House Fire

Saturday, July 2, 2011  At 00:42 hrs York County 911 struck out Box 58-13  for a Residential Structure Fire "to the rear a house deck on fire" in the 1000 blk of Oakwood Road in Shrewsbury Township. The Box called for Companies 58, 61, BC 45, 59, MICU 58 to respond. Engine 59-1 (OIC Lt. Naylor) responded with 5 personnel. Engine 58-2 arrived and reported a two story dwelling with "heavy fire from the roof".  Due to the heavy fire conditions Command requested the "Working Fire Assignment" and additional Tankers. This request alerted Tanker 59 to respond. As Engine 59-1 arrived on scene they were instructed to advance a 3rd handline to Division 2 and prepare to enter the attic. As members prepared to enter the house with the handline Division 2's officer requested 2 members with hooks. Due to the fact that we had 4 members the crew was divided into 2. One crew reported to Division 2 and pulled ceilings and walls while the other crew manned the handline. Crews from 58 & 61 made an agressive interior attack and were able to contain the fire to the attic area only.  Within minutes of their arrival crews had the fire extinguished. The Box was scaled back and Command held only the units from 58 & 61 to wait for the Fire Marshal. Engine 59-1 was released from the scene at 03:43 hrs and transfered to Station 61.

   


 

Vehicle into a Structure

Tuesday, June 28, 2011  At 05:42 hrs the morning slumber was broken when York County 911 sounded Box 59-4 for a MVC "Vehicle into a Structure" in Shrewsbury Township. The call alerted Company 59 and Ambulance 59 to respond. Chief 59 (Anstine) and Rescue 59 (OIC Lt. Naylor) responded with 4 personnel. Chief Anstine was the first to arrive and found a single vehicle into a block building with the occupants that had fled the scene. The Rescue arrived shortly after and members secured the vehicle and investigated the building for damage. Members remained at the scene while the State Police attempted to located the occupants of the vehicle due to signs they may be injuired. After being unable to locate anyone the Box was placed available at 06:25 hrs.
